MANTRAC TANZANIA SECURES 25 MW DEAL IN ZANZIBAR.

After one and half year of close follow up, Mantrac Tanzania finally signed a contract to supply 25MW Emergency and Backup Capacity Program with Zanzibar Electricity Corporation (ZECO).

The deal started in May 2008, when the Island experienced 1st major blackout because of failure of submarine cable (21st May – 19th June). The deal was not concluded by that time due to various reasons. Mantrac Tanzania through its Power Systems department looked this as an opportunity and established very good relationship with customer, addressing our product support capability and kept eye on every development.

At the end of last year, the Island was hit again with another major blackout that went on for more than three months. This is when power system team put more effort and concentration of which at last made things to happen. “It was not an easy deal, there was stiff competition coming from both outside and inside the country; our key success factors were quality of our proposal presentations, our strength in product support and maintaining good relationship with the customer”, mentioned James Serre, Sales Team Leader – Power Systems. A very significant contribution also came from Mr. Islam Tag Eldin, the Power Systems Area Manager – East Africa who went ahead negotiating with the various donors from Europe and America on behalf of the customer for financial support just to demonstrate how Mantrac teams up with customers to get them complete solutions.

The deal started with a proposal to supply only equipments (quantity of 32 * XQ1000, MV Switch gear and Step up transformer) but was then finalized to be a turkey project comprising of all civil work from bush clearance, electromechanical works, installation of the equipment, testing and commissioning.

Zanzibar Island is a semi-autonomous part of the United Republic of Tanzania with total area of 2643km2 and population of about 1.4m. Zanzibar's economy is based primarily on the production of cloves and Tourism is a major foreign currency earner. Main source of energy is through sub-marine cable from Tanzania mainland.
